The Company offers the details of this vessel in good faith but cannot guarantee or warrant the accuracy of this information nor warrant the condition of the vessel. This vessel is offered subject to prior sale, price change, or withdrawal without notice.
Built in 1962 at the Abeking and Rasmussen yard in Lemwerder, Germany, S/Y WOODWIND, Hull #89, has enjoyed meticulous care over her history. Construction is of carvel mahogany planking, with tight seam construction, on laminated white oak frames. Her keel, floor timbers, and deadwood are oak and she is fastened with silicon bronze screws.
The wood decks are Dynel overlay with epoxy over. Her cabin trunk is planked mahogany with a cabin top of planked cedar with white lead covering and canvas overlay (replaced in 2008). Deck trim, coamings, hatches and other trim is also mahogany.
Rebuilt in 2009, the cockpit is self-bailing with a bridge deck and natural teak sole.
The topsides and deck are painted white and there is a blue boot top with a green bottom.
The vessel is yawl rigged with both masts being box construction of sitka spruce. The main mast steps through the cabin top and lands on a mast step atop the floor timbers (the mast step was lengthened and reinforced in 2003). The mizzen mast is on the aft deck with a compression structure transmitting the load to the horn timber. The chain plates pass through the deck and are bolted through the hull.
A keel hung rudder is tiller steered. The keel is of iron ballast.
Current ownership dates from 2002. There have been eight owners, though two of them owned her for only one season each. She has primarily been a New England boat, however she spent 15 years in the Chesapeake Bay.
A detailed history/record of maintenance performed since 2002 is available. Beyond the routine annual attention (i.e., topsides, deck and bottom painting, external brightwork, spar varnish, mechanical maintenance, etc.), other notable work includes a rebuilding of the cockpit, mast step lengthening and reinforcement, select keel bolt replacement in 2003, frame end reinforcement, targeted plank refastening, recovering of the cabin top, stripping, repainting and re-varnishing of the entire interior, etc. Annual engine oil analyses are available.
Under current ownership, S/Y WOODWIND has been maintained by Concordia Yachts and Dodson Boatyard (Stonington, CT).
Upon descending the companionway and "going below", one finds what might be expected of a traditional wooden yacht - and then some. Understated yet rich in detail, the raised panel, varnished pine bulkheads provide the feel of warmth and craftmanship. Adding to the ambiance is the mahogany butterfly main salon hatch. Directly under the companionway is the engine box. Port and starboard of the companionway are the galley features with the stainless sink and stainless ice box to port, and a two-burner, Force 10 CNG stovetop to starboard. Water is supplied to the galley sink via either a foot pump or a large (re-chromed) manual pump. Moving forward, there are port and starboard settees each having fold-down Concordia style berths. Lockers and shelves are provided port and starboard. A centerline cherry, drop-leaf table with built-in storage compartments provides a comfortable dining space. There is also a Concordia black iron coal/wood stove adjacent to the port main bulkhead. Forward of the pine, main bulkheads is the fully enclosed head compartment to port and double hanging lockers to starboard. The forepeak is defined by a U-shaped setteewith fold-down pipe berths port and starboard. Storage is provided outboard, above and below the berth areas. The anchor locker is fully forward of course. (NOTE: the entire interior's painted and varnished surfaces were stripped and re-painted/re-varnished in 2011)
