It is likely that if you are looking at WOODWIND, Hull #89 of the iconic Concordia Yawl class, that you are already familiar with this design.  Perhaps you have sailed aboard a Concordia, or read about them extensively, and understand just how perfect a design this was when new, and just how perfect it remains.  You probably know these boats do so much well - not to mention all while being drop-jaw gorgeous.  But if not, I am happy to have that conversation with you, as I am an enthusiastic admirer of these fine yachts.

There are many on the market - and the key to buying a Concordia is truly finding a properly cared for and updated example at a proper price.  I think you will find WOODWIND to be just that.  She has been maintained professionally to the highest standards, on behalf of a loving and demanding owner, by a yard with the skills and understanding required to properly care for a Concordia (and they care for many).

A May 2019 survey found the boat to be in fine condition, with a few recommendations which the owner had addressed by the yard.   WOODWIND is now seriously for sale and ready to be compared to the other Concords available - she will be on any short list of the best examples.

With all maintenance up to date, all finishes in great condition, relatively new sails with little use, a strong engine (with regular oil analysis reports available), good canvas, recovered interior cushions, etc etc etc, WOODWIND deserves the attention of anyone considering a CONCORDIA.

Please feel free to call me to learn more about WOODWIND, or to arrange an inspection.

CONSTRUCTION

Built in 1962 at the Abeking and Rasmussen yard in Lemwerder, Germany, S/Y WOODWIND, Hull #89, has enjoyed meticulous care over her history.  Construction is of carvel mahogany planking, with tight seam construction, on laminated white oak frames.  Her keel, floor timbers, and deadwood are oak and she is fastened with silicon bronze screws.

The wood decks are Dynel overlay with epoxy over.  Her cabin trunk is planked mahogany with a cabin top of planked cedar with white lead covering and canvas overlay (replaced in 2008).  Deck trim, coamings, hatches and other trim is also mahogany.

Rebuilt in 2009, the cockpit is self-bailing with a bridge deck and natural teak sole.

The topsides and deck are painted white and there is a blue boot top with a green bottom.

The vessel is yawl rigged with both masts being box construction of sitka spruce.  The main mast steps through the cabin top and lands on a mast step atop the floor timbers (the mast step was lengthened and reinforced in 2003).  The mizzen mast is on the aft deck with a compression structure transmitting the load to the horn timber.  The chain plates pass through the deck and are bolted through the hull.

A keel hung rudder is tiller steered.  The keel is of iron ballast.

VESSEL HISTORY

Current ownership dates from 2002.  There have been eight owners, though two of them owned her for only one season each.  She has primarily been a New England boat, however she spent 15 years in the Chesapeake Bay.

A detailed history/record of maintenance performed since 2002 is available.  Beyond the routine annual attention (i.e., topsides, deck and bottom painting, external brightwork, spar varnish, mechanical maintenance, etc.), other notable work includes a rebuilding of the cockpit, mast step lengthening and reinforcement, select keel bolt replacement in 2003, frame end reinforcement, targeted plank refastening, recovering of the cabin top, stripping, repainting and re-varnishing of the entire interior, etc.  Annual engine oil analyses are available.

Under current ownership, S/Y WOODWIND has been maintained by Concordia Yachts and Dodson Boatyard (Stonington, CT).

INTERIOR LAYOUT/FEATURES

Upon descending the companionway, one finds what might be expected of a traditional wooden yacht - and then some.  Understated, yet rich in detail, the raised panel, varnished pine bulkheads provide the feel of warmth and the exceptional craftmanship for which Abeking and Rasmussen is known .

Directly under the companionway is the engine box.  Port and starboard of the companionway are the galley features with the stainless sink and stainless ice box to port, and a two-burner, Force 10 CNG stovetop to starboard.  Water is supplied to the galley sink via either a foot pump or a large (re-chromed) manual pump.

Moving forward, there are port and starboard settees each having fold-down Concordia style berths.  Lockers and shelves are provided port and starboard.  A centerline cherry, drop-leaf table with built-in storage compartments provides a comfortable dining space. Adding to the ambiance is the mahogany butterfly main salon hatch - always an attraction in a Concodia. There is also a Concordia black iron coal/wood stove adjacent to the port main bulkhead. The pine, raised panel bulkheads are another Concordia signature element, and one never tires of them.

The fully enclosed head compartment is forward to port and double hanging lockers to starboard.  The forepeak is defined by a U-shaped settee with fold-down pipe berths port and starboard.  Storage is provided outboard, above and below the berth areas.  The anchor locker is fully forward of course.

(NOTE:  the entire interior's painted and varnished surfaces were stripped and re-painted/re-varnished in 2011)
