1970 Royal Huisman Chance 44 Ketch
This is one of those boats that draws everyone's eye, and for good reason. Her lines are fantastic, her condition is A+, and she exudes exceptional quality and intriguing design. Wen you step on board you immediately know she is special.
And special she is. Designed by Britton Chance and built in aluminum by Royal Huisman, she is undoubtedly one of the top boats in any harbor she enters. But not only is her pedigree special, so is the ownership she has had. Her current owner has owned her twice - this most recent period of time for the last twenty years. Over the last 16 years, his love affair with MARIONETTE included an extensive restoration to the highest level of detail, leaving her in as-new condition. Sne is now in as-new condition. This is a special boat indeed, and an amazing opportunity to acquire a "holy Grail" vessel that will bring her next owner incredible joy, pride and performance.
Read on for more details on MARIONETTE. And then come see her for yourself - she is sure to leave you slack-jawed and just might steal your heart.

MARIONETTE is in as-new condition following a long term storage period during which her artisan shipwright owner, who already knew the boat inside out, made significant improvements and restorations.
Her top notch construction shows no degradation. As a 2017 survey noted "Her build quality was reflected in the total lack of corrosion after 47 years". Indeed, when you gain access to the interior of the hull inside lockers, you see shiny, bright aluminum, in perfect condition. The structural aluminum framing is every 10 inches - which is impressive. Overbuilt in many ways, she is still of moderate displacement for her age, which, combined with her design, results in a very comfortable boat in a seaway.
The boat has been improved with the following highlights, all barely used since completion of the renovation last year:
- New Main mast (Sparcraft) and standing rigging.
- New running rigging
- Mizzen mast and boom re-painted.
- New teak decks with almost zero use since installation. No fasteners, fully glued. They are perfect. Complete epoxy sealing of the structural decking prior to installation of the teak.

- Interior completely refinished to show as new.
- Total Awlgrip paint and re-varnishing of all finishes.

MARIONETTE is totally prepared to go to sea. This could be the tidiest, best organized vessel we have seen. More details below.
CONSTRUCTION:
Royal Huisman is the pre-eminent builder of extraordinary aluminum boats and, while perhaps one of their smaller builds, one can see evidence of their expertise in every aspect of MARIONETTE. The aluminum frames are on 10" centers, and connected by longitudinal stringers. Hull plating is 1/4", with 3/8" in the bilge. Lead ballast was poured internally, and plated over. Fin keel, Full skeg rudder.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
All the way forward is a large chain locker, with access from the forward cabin.
The forward cabin features a vee-berth with an insert. There is a large number of storage areas including drawers, lockers, hanging locker, and shelves. A privacy door to the main salon allows private, en-suite access to the forward head from the forward cabin. Ventilation and light are ample.
The Forward head has voluminous storage, a manual toilet, a shower with sump and teak grate, and a sink.
The main salon makes excellent use of the wide beam - with a shallow u-shaped settee to port, with excellent storage behind the settee, and above in the cabinetry. The large dining table is fixed with two drop leaves. To starboard is a pull-out settee with storage in drawers and lockers above, and with a pilot berth above the storage. Three people can sleep in the salon.
There is one step up going aft to the level of the galley and the nav station.
The galley is to port, u-shaped, with exceptional storage. There are two Seafrost refrigerator/freezer units, an acclaimed Broadwater four burner stove with oven, and a large stainless sink. This is a true sea-going galley with the stove outboard, and the sink nearly centerline.
Opposite the galley is the Nav station - with a permanent seat, and a huge chart table with storage and inside and drawers below. The electrical panel, radios, and chartplotter are all located at the nav station.
Aft of the nav station to starboard is a large hanging locker, and just past that is the companionway ladder.
Going aft from the companionway is a short passage into the aft cabin. The aft cabin has a large area of storage drawers and locker on the center line, with excellent access to the engine compartment in this area. The steering gear can also be accessed here.
There are single quarter berths both port and starboard, with a small seat below the starboard berth. Additional storage below and forward of the berths. A door separates the entire cabin from the forward portion of the boat.
The private aft head is to starboard, forward of the berth.
Overall, this interior is an exceptional layout for life aboard both at anchor and underway. It provides utility unlike most new boats, with proper tankage, storage, sea berths, hand hold, etc., while still allowing two private cabins, and two heads. It feels spacious, comfortable and luxurious.. All wood-work is satin varnished teak in perfect condition, with a lovely cabin sole of teak and holly, offset by a European/Scandinavian blue upholstery. It doesn't get any better than this.
