1988 Hinckley Sou'wester 42

location icon Stonington, Connecticut
Year 1988
Length 42 ft
Price
$250,000

EARTH ANGEL was built in 1988 for an owner who considered her the ultimate sailboat.  His continuous ownership since that time, including considerable upgrading and superb maintenance, has reflected his strong feelings for this fine vessel.  And like many Sou'wester 42's, she has the ocean miles under her keel to prove just how special and capable she is.

EARTH ANGEL has the preferred Cherry interior, with the rare aft cabin layout.  This interior format is particularly relevant today when the desire for private sleeping cabins is still strong.  Her two settee/two pilot berth layout on the salon makes her feel open and roomy, a nd provides excellent sea berths when offshore with crew.

EARTH ANGEL is a yawl - which this owner loves.  He appreciates the ability to modify sail arrangements both upwind and down to suit the conditions - finding the yawl rig particularly flexible.  And just a few years ago he installed a Selden electric furling mast - a nod to convenience, safety and flexibility.  This mast is the height of the normal sloop rig on a SW42, so if desired, she could be converted to a sloop quite simply.

Electric winches, a brand new generator, air-conditioning, heat, water maker, etc.  EARTH ANGEL is totally equipped and maintained to be taken on her next voyage.  Highly recommended.

Vessel Overview

many consider the Hinckley Sou'wester 42 to be iconic, in appearance and function.  As a result, these boats have been reviewed and detailed may times over the years.  I will not attempt to repeat all the accolades or details, but will give you the particulars on Earth Angel.

LAYOUT:

EARTH ANGEL has the somewhat unique interior featuring an aft cabin.   Her interior is satin varnished cherry, perhaps the most elegant interior wood finish done by Hinckley. The cabin sole is solid teak and holly, an impressive construction detail.

Begininng forward is the traditional Vee-berth cabin, with drawers below the berth, lockers above, A bureau of drawers aft of the berth to port and a hanging locker to starboard.  The standard Hinckley translucent hatch above allows both light and ventilation, and there are two fixed ports.  There is both heat and air conditioning in this cabin.

Next aft to starboard is the large hanging locker.  Opposite, the large head compartment is found.  This head is a "wet head" - the shower is the entire head.  Often sailors skip the curtain and use the shower as a cleaning opportunity.  However, EARTH ANGEL does have a curtain track for those who like to keep the water contained when showering.

The main salon features the traditional port and starboard settees with a pilot berth to port.  Above the starboard berth are several storage lockers.  outboard of both berths are three large drawers (6 in total).  There is no shortage of storage in this layout.  There is large translucent hatch above, and several fixed portlights both port and starboard, with room-darkening curtains to draw when desired.  There is both heat and air conditioning in this cabin.  The centerline cherry table has two leaves for flexibility and two storage areas in the center.

Four cowl vents with dorado boxes ventilate the interior.

The nav station is aft facing, at the end f the starboard settee.  The electrical panel and a GPS nav panel are located here.  There is storage in the nav table, and drawers below.

Aft of the nav station is the quarter cabin.  There is ample standing headroom and one fixed port and two opening ports.  There is a large hanging locker and several drawers and lockers.  This cabin has it's own air-conditioning unit. There is an access panel to get to the side and top of the engine inboard of the berth.

The Galley is U-shaped and in the port quarter.  There is an large top opening Fridge/Freezer with two compartments (both can be fridges or one can be a freezer.  They each have a SeaFrost holding plate unit installed. There is a 3-burner Shipmate stainless steel stove with oven, gimbaled. A double stainless steel sink is located toward the centerline.  Dish and pantry storage is exceptional.

The companionway stair lift to provide access to the engine room.
