One mark of a good design is how well a boat ages. Once the glimmer of gelcoat fades, most boats join the slush pile of unremarkable fiberglass production boats. You know them, or maybe you don't, the ABC 30, which looks just like the XYZ 32 in the next slip over, one white plastic boat after another. And while most of these old boats are still good boats, capable of delivering the subtle rewards that only a sailboat can, there is little to distinguish them. The Sabre 38, designed by Roger Hewson, is different. John Kretschmer, Sailing Magazine, 2008
The Sabre 38 MK II is a known quantity - highly respected and regarded as a proper sailboat that occasionally wins races and cruises with grace and performance. With her fin keel, LATIRUS provides the performance one expects from this wonderful design.
LATIRUS has the standard layout with a roomy forward cabin, featuring a large Vee-berth, hanging locker, drawers, cabinets, cubbies, and a vanity with sink. Her interior is all teak, and it has been varnished - a considerable upgrade over the oiled finish that was standard. The cabin sole is teak and holly. Cabinet doors are louvered for ventilation, or tambour. The hull is ceilinged with teak slats as well. All in all, this is a luxioursly finished interior.
The main salon has a super comfortable gathering area, a double leaf dining table that folds up against the main bulkhead, and a Force 10 stainless steel cabin heater. The port settee makes into a double berth. Lockers and bookshelves are above the settees both port and starboard.
The galley is aft to port, and features the following:
- Large counter space
- Double stainless steel sinks
- Dedicated trash locker in counter top
- 3 Burner GSI stove with oven, uses CNG (safer than and generally preferred over propane)
- Seafrost refrigeration system
- Ample storage
Aft of the galley is the aft cabin with a large double berth, several lockers, a hanging locker, and proper ventilation. The primary engine access is from this cabin, with a removable panel that exposes almost the entire engine.
Opposite the galley to starboard is the aft facing nav station, with an electrical panel, and an electronics array. The nav table opens with a large storage area underneath, and there are several drawers, including the Sabre signature tool drawer.
Aft of the nav station is the large head and shower. There is excellent ventilation in this area, a large vanity with sink, storage lockers, and a separate shower area.
The cockpit is the proven Sabre T-shape, with ergonomic seat backs, storage cubbies, a shallow seat storage area over the quarter berth, and a deep lazarette on the starboard side.
Sailing instruments are in pods on a stainless mount above and forward of the companionway slide. All sail controls are led to the cockpit, with 4 winches and several stoppers on the cabin roof.
Primary winches are electric, a significant advantage.
There is a Garmin GPS at the helm, as well as the autopilot control.
