KAIMALIE is a fantastic Catalina 385 - clean, tidy, professionally maintained, gently used - and she sure looks the part of a "cream puff".  I am always impressed when I step aboard Catalinas - they have an edge on some of their competition, in my opinion, in that their gelcoat is higher quality and ages better, their deck hardware is more impressive, and their interior components are a higher quality that one might expect.  The Catalina designs always delight - and the 385 is no exception.

KAIMALIE also has an edge over most other Catalina 385's in the performance department - she has  a deep fin keel and a conventional, full battened main - these two factors result in sparkling sailing performance and she will certainly perform favorably compared to sisterships with the shallow keel and in-mast furling main.  In fact, she weighs 1,000 lbs less than the wing keel version, and has a more favorable displacement to length and sail area to displacement ratios (and the full batten main is estimated to be 8-10% larger than the furling version).

I highly encourage your inspection of KAIMALIE.  I am confident you will find that she does not disappoint in any department and you find her to be as described.  She is easily seen in Stonington, CT.  Call for an appointment!

Vessel Overview

Stepping aboard KAIMALIE one immediately senses the quality - in the finishes, the solid feel, the oversized deck hardware, the Stainless port and windows frames, and the ergonomics.  This is an upscale boat with much to distinguish her from many other popular (and more common) builders.

The cockpit is large, and comfortable.  Sail handling is simple with a well organized layout and everything within reach.  Lazarette storage is excellent.  There are two stern pulpit seats with cushions.  A centerline table with leaves also has two drink holders and a storage area in the center.  A large scoop transom (with folding swim ladder and a cockpit shower) makes swimming and boarding from a dinghy more convenient.  KAIMALIE was upgraded with dinghy davits and a dinghy engine crane as well.

Her canvas in in excellent condition, and she has covers for the Isenglass panels in the dodger.

Entering the interior, one finds the familiar layout - but this seems to have more elbow room than many 38 footers.  And, her layout makes sense.

The forward cabin features a centerline double, with drawers below, and lockers above and aft of the berth.  There is a seat to port with a small vanity table.  A private entrance to the head creates a sense of luxury.  Two opening ports and an overhead hatch (with solar ventilator) provide both light and ventilation. The berth has a true mattress rather than a foam cushion.

The head is next aft to port.  This can be entered directly from the salon or from the forward cabin.  There is ample storage, and a separate shower area (with a curtain and sump), and a lovely vanity with a raised glass bowl sink.  The toilet is electric.  And opening port and an overhead hatch provide light and ventilation.

The salon features port and starboard settee, with the port settee forming an L shape.  The port settee can be converted to a double berth.  The table has a flexible leaf system which can expand it's size.  There is a 28" flat panel mounted on the main bulkhead.  There is storage above, below and behind the settees.  At the aft end of the port settee is the Nav station, and the adjacent electrical control panel.  The overhead hatch and multiple fixed and opening ports provide light and ventilation.  There are also two fixed hull ports.  All cushions in the salon are covered in upgraded Ultraleather.

The galley is aft to starboard. and features a double stainless steel sink, a Princess Gourmet II two burner propane stove with oven (appears unused), a microwave, a top loading refrigerated box with a Frigoboat refrigeration system, and front loading Isotherm refrigerator. There is exceptional storage including a top loading pantry area in the counter, drawers and lockers. The counters are Corianders (or the equivalent).

The private aft cabin is to port, with a large double berth, a seat, and storage lockers.  There is access to the rear of the engine in this cabin.  There is a large hatch which opens into the cockpit, and opening ports.

The engine box under the hinged companionway stairs is completely removable and offers exceptional access to the entire engine.

The wood finishes are teak and teak veneers with varnish finish.;  The cabin sole is a composite with "teak and holly"  appearance.

Manufacturer Provided Description

Lead keels, long travelers for precise sail control, and lengthy inboard genoa tracks so the sail plan is balanced in all wind conditions are just a few of the many design features that sets the Catalina 385 apart from other yachts.

More unique features include a watertight StrikeZone™ collision bulkhead aft of the anchor locker. A backstay system creates an impressive cockpit for the avid sailor, and Catalina’s unique SecureSocket™ chain plates mast support system affords superior load resolution.

The 385’s moderate beam is carried well aft for a spacious cockpit; modest freeboard reduces windage and a beautiful hand-finished teak interior brings it all home with classic warmth and styling that has been a trademark of Catalina for 41 years.
